This website and it’s corresponding Facebook page (Epilepsy Awareness South Africa) was started as a community forum, where members can voice concerns, ask advise and generally be supported in their daily struggle with Epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. Anyone can develop epilepsy. Epilepsy affects both males and females of all races, ethnic backgrounds and ages.
Epilepsy may occur as a result of a genetic disorder or an acquired brain injury, such as a trauma or stroke.During a seizure, a person experiences abnormal behaviour, symptoms and sensations, sometimes including loss of consciousness. There are few symptoms between seizures.Epilepsy is usually treated by medication and in some cases by surgery, devices or dietary changes.
